Because we have decided to mix the two genres, horror and fantasy, to fit our plot of Hansel and Gretel the fantasy/fairytale we have decided to do background research on all three elements we wish to incorporate into our project. To create the horror side we are taking something innocent (The fairy tale Hansel and Gretel) and creating a dark and twisted element to it; with inspiration from Tim Burton (mainly.)

Fantasy films are films usually involving supernatural events, make-believe creatures, magic, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is seen to be different from science fiction and horror films, however these genres can and do overlap.  Fantasy films were relatively scarce in the 1980s, when high-tech filmmaking techniques increased the audiences interest in fantasy films become increasingly popular. In the 2000s over 40 films were created in the genre of fantasy here are some examples;

  1. Corpse bride
  2. Enchanted
  3. Elf
  4. The Golden Compass
  5. Harry Potter films
  6. Shrek (series)
  7. Stardust
  8. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
  9. Pirates of the Caribbean (series of films)
  10. Coraline

These are just a selection.

Horror films are purposefully unsettling that strive to create emotions of fear, disgust and horror from the audience. They often feature scenes that make the viewer jump and catch them off guard to do these genres are frequently over lapped: with fantasy, thriller and science fiction.

Horror films deal with taking the viewer’s worst fears and the scary unknowns come to life in a movie format. This can involve taking something innocent and manipulating the audience’s feelings and emotions to make them scared of this reality. This can involve taking an everyday ‘innocent’ and ‘safe’ reality and creating it into something scary and something to be feared; for example the movie Mirrors takes an everyday object (a mirror) and creating a very scary and unsafe feeling about this object.

There are many elements to make a typical horror movie such as; gore, supernatural creatures, historical events, torture, demons, the afterlife etc. However the movies that involve supernatural beings, comes under a number of genres so movies that have super natural characters are not always specifically under the Horror genre.
